Strawberry Fields Educational Program

Description

The program begins with an educational DVD presentation outlining the many stages in the production side of the farm, from preparing the soil, laying plastic, irrigation, cutting the holes, planting, trimming, picking, packing the strawberries and sending them off to the markets. The presentation is then followed by an industry talk with question time there after.

The next step is to take the children out to the strawberry field where they will be provided with an empty 250g punnet to fill for themselves and take home or have for morning/afternoon tea. While in the field they will be educated on the correct way to pick a strawberry and shown what to look for in colour variation. They will get to see, touch, smell, and hear all of the natural surrounding activities of a full productive working farm.

We then show the children a real life, very busy packing shed in full operation. Where they will view from a safe platform the everyday requirements that are needed to fulfill our demanding nutritional supply for fresh quality fruit. From sorting to packing and storing in large cold rooms before heading off to the markets.

At this point the children will be able to see our retail outlet attached to the packing shed and have an opportunity to look at what other products can be made from strawberries.

We conclude the tour with a well deserved play in our tractor playground area.

Our tours vary slightly to accommodate the appropriate age groups.
